Live Review: Shadow Child, Kry Wolf, Eli and Fur @ Switch, Southampton – 21.02.15

Last Saturday night saw Switch open its doors to house and bass record label Food Music, and with the two label bosses Shadow Child and Kry Wolf on the line up, with the added flavour of Eli and Fur, it was a mouth watering prospect. Needless to say, it lived up to its expectations, a packed out Southampton crowd laying witness to a swashbuckling showcase of the brands potential.

From the offset it was clear to see that the bass had been ranked up a notch for this night, the floor vibrating as Eli and Fur delivered up their usual infectious and seductive house grooves. The London duo’s sexy and melodic style providing the perfect warming antidote to the cool and blistery conditions from outside of the club. Like a very nice starter, they appeased the musical palate and set a good tone for the rest of the night. Now, it was time for the main course as the joints and muscles were being fully loosened up by Shadow Child, as he took to the decks like a prime medium rare sirloin steak. Smashing out his remixes to Sub Focus’s ‘Tidal Wave’ and Hot Natureds ‘Skydiving’, he announced himself promptly, and with Anabel Englunds gorgeous voice on ‘Skydiving’ ringing around the club, the atmosphere was awash with great vibes. Moving from the dance floor to the upstairs balcony area, the view down below was a sea of human bodies swaying and moving to the beat, a truly beautiful sight. Kry Wolf made sure that there was no sign of letting up as he took over from Shadow Child, absolutely tearing the place apart with ‘No Trouble’ and ‘Education’. His mixture of very bass-heavy house went down a treat, insuring the dance floor was still full into the closing hours.

As fans tear themselves away from the venue, it is amazing to think how far house music has come, from being an anomaly five or so years ago, to now being one the biggest mainstream genres. Whatever your opinion is on that, whether you think the majority of people are there just because it is the ‘in’ thing at the moment, or not, if you go there with the right positive frame of mind you will end up having a great night. House is here to stay, and judging by this night, I don’t think that is a bad thing at all.
